Edy Wong, Collage Squares, Magazine collage, 6"x12", 5/03/10, FCS art classroom

This is my last piece of my concentration. As you can see I wanted to continue working with collage and I combined different pictures cut out from magazines to create different scenes on each square. I think my pieces have gotten more and more abstract and creative depictions of flowers. I tried to make unlikely combinations of flowers and backgrounds and tried to make different scenes on each square. I also tried to vary the color and shapes.

I really went out of the box with this one. I discovered that I really liked working with collage because I can make the piece abstract by combining different pictures of flowers together and forming a story out of it. This piece is basically depicting what a child imagines. In this case the little girl is imagining flowers and as you can see the flowers are all bigger than real life because a child's imagination is creative and usually doesn't conform with real life. After all, that's why we call it imagination, right? The white thought bubble is full of words because the girl is making up her own story and her creativity continues in the world around her as seen by the big flowers and grass around her. It sorta reminds me of Alice in Wonderland.

My main goal with this piece was to create different layers of paint and color to create definition and creativity to the flowers. I tried to incorporate different hues/shades of colors on the petals and even tried to make it kinda abstract. The more colors the better. Some of the colors I blended well while some I left very defined and layered.

This was surprisingly really fast to complete because I used WATERCOLOR!! I love that about watercolor. So anyways this is a simple piece and fairly easy to do. I did this all free hand, so you can just imagine how easy it was. I don't usually do light colored flowers, I tend to like darker colored objects because I like things that stand out, so this is probably one of my few light colored pieces. I like how the red and organges really bring out the individual flowers.

For this piece I decided to do an outline of flowers that I drew from pictures. It sorta looks like a design and I decided to add only a little color to the middle parts of the flowers so it wouldn't be that plain. This took me a while to complete because I had to first draw the flowers in pencil and then go over them with pen. This piece was also inspired by the shapes composition assignment (when I had to outline the shoes).

You know those pretty little white blossoms that grow on trees during the first few weeks of spring? Well I like these flowers from far away because they make the tree look like its covered in snow. But I've never seen one of these flowers up close. So I picked some that fell on the ground and I decided to arrange a photograph using these flowers. My favorite arrangement was this single flower that I stuck on another tree. So this flower really doesn't grow from this particular tree but it does look cool if it did.

Water Lilies

This is my sixth piece of my concentration. I decided to paint water lilies using watercolor because I thought it would be appropriate. Water lilies in watercolor, get it? ANYWAYS..this piece turned out to be time consuming because I had to add detail to the individual lilies to make them look more realistic. I like using watercolor because even though the paint dried I can still erase most of it with water if I needed to fix some things, which I needed to do a lot with this piece. I added lily flowers that I printed out because I couldn't paint lilies that looked normal so I decided to cut out the flowers and glue them onto the paper.

Flower Collection

This is my fifth concentration piece. I decided to take lots of pictures of the same type of flower for this piece because I really liked these flowers in my backyard. I think they are absolutely beautiful and the best way to capture their beauty, in my opinion, is through photography. I wanted this piece to include many photos because I thought it would be interesting to show the flowers from different angles, perspective, etc. and because they were just so pretty I couldn't setting on merely a few pictures. Taking pictures also allowed me to finish this assignment pretty quickly since I was gone for Musicale and was falling behind. Taking pictures also allowed me to capture the flowers' detail and color accurately. Some of the challenges I faced was getting the lighting correct because I took some pictures on a cloudy day (which offered me excellent lighting) and some I took on another day when I was a little sunnier. So some of the lighting didn't match.

Birds of Paradise

This is my fourth concentration piece. I decided to paint birds of paradise flowers because as I was deciding what to do, I looked out my window and saw these flowers outside in my backyard, and I thought it would be nice to include these bright and beautiful flowers in my concentration. I decided to use watercolor because I figured it would allow me to do it in a faster time, and I wanted to experiment with the blending of watercolors. I also suddenly liked to use watercolors. I don't know why, since I have never really liked to use watercolors in the past. I tried to incorporate as many colors as possible to make these flowers bright and special. I painted the flowers with colors that are slightly different from their natural colors (like the stems) because I thought that it would add an interesting touch to them, and I wanted to experiment with more abstract and creative elements. This piece is pretty successful in my opinion, and I got the highest score out of all my other concentration pieces so far, and it's kinda funny when you consider how late I waited to start this piece. I am definitely going to use watercolor as my medium on later pieces now that I found out I like it. I'll post the pic later since I forgot to bring my camera.

Cherry Blossoms

This is my third concentration piece. As you can probably see I tried to include an abstract/surreal element with this piece by painting the background with different colors of watercolor. I decided to use watercolor for my background after being inspired by Sophia Brueckner's artwork because I thought it was pretty cool. But the watercolor didn't come out exactly as I expected to because I wanted the different colors to stand out more but they blended in more than I wanted them to. I should have dried the colors right away because the colors would look good right when wet but when they tried they just blended together. Mr. Inman suggested I use salt to give it a speckled effect and I liked what it did to the background. The flowers are cherry blossoms, painted with acrylics to make them stand out. I decided to draw piano keys on the branches because I thought it would add a nice creative touch to the piece. I decided to paint different colored cherry blossoms on each branch to make it more colorful. Overall I think it turned out good.

Piano Flowers

This is my second piece of my concentration. As you can see I added some abstract details, the piano keys, for creativity and because I thought regular flowers would look too ordinary. I wanted something imaginative because I had originally painted normal and realistic flowers and I thought that was boring. So I decided to draw piano keys in the center. I drew them partly because I liked them and partly because I play the piano.

Purple Flowers

So here is my first piece of my concentration. Overall I think I'm satisfied with it. I started it late so I didn't have as much time as I wanted to paint it. My goal with this piece was to create intricate flowers by using different colors. This piece is pretty basic and straightforward but I want to try something more abstract with my future pieces. Some of the difficulties I face include not having adequate time, as I mentioned before, and also having limited paint.

Concentration Storyboard

This is my storyboard for my concentration, which is going to be on flowers. I chose this concentration because I feel that flowers are simple but it allows room for me to play it up or add some of my own touches to it. I think I'll put in an abstract element to my pieces. The medium I'm mainly going to use is acrylics. I might change some of my ideas (I usually tend to to that), but you can kinda get an general idea of my concentration. The main goal of my concentration on flowers is to depict the flowers at interesting angles/perspectives, if you know what I mean. For example, the first thumbnail that I have is a picture of tulips, but the twist is that the picture would be from an ant's point of view, so the flowers look massive and dramatic and you would feel like you're looking up at them. If you look at the second thumbnail, the picture is a closeup of a flower, so again a unique perspective. I do not just want to depict flowers entirely realistically, so I might also add some funky colors or special touches to them. I don't exactly know the sizes my pieces are going to be; I think I'll just go with the flow and hopefully gain more inspiration.

The Nature of Love

With this assigment I wanted to experiment with a medium I have never used before: photography. I decided to try photography because I didn't have a lot of time to do this assignment and I figured acrylics (the medium I initially wanted to work with) would take too long and deprive me of too much sleep.

The theme in these three pictures is LOVE and the three pieces are connected by NATURE. For the first picture, I cut a small heart out of paper and stuck it in a flower bush; for the second I put a ring on top of a cute asparagus-y plant like thing; and for my final picture I hung pictures of wedding photos cut out from a magazine onto a branch of a tree/vine plant. The challenges I faced was trying to get pictures of the objects from nice angles and to make sure that the objects in the pictures came out focused and emphasized. I would have taken more pictures of different things but it was raining for the entire week so I couldn't do that.

The three pieces show a progression: in a couple's relationship, it starts out with an exchange of "I love you"s, next is the engagement ring, and finally they get married.

The Figures of Dance

The assignment was to create a figure composition with an emphasis to space. I decided to use ballerinas as my figures because I have always admired ballet and I think the dancers are nothing short of beautiful and amazing. All ballet poses and movements are incredible, and I think they show excellent form, so that's why I chose to draw them. The hardest part of this assignment was getting the proportions right and getting the poses to look natural and realistic. I was planning on leaving their costume blank but then I realized it would look too plain so I added color only to their dresses and pointe shoes. I think doing this emphasizes space because the dancers themselves are drawn simply and incompletely, showing that their is space within them, and since the background is blank, it shows that there is space around them. After doing this project I found out that I love using ink as my medium.

Dixie Dominus CD Release Poster

To most challenging part of this assignment was thinking of how my poster should look like. I honestly could not think of how to do my poster so I finally settled on tiny music notes for the background and I wrote in the title in marker, but I thought it was way too plain, so I covered it with the colored strips. I typed the words on the computer then put them on color backgrounds to give the poster some color, and it looked a lot better thank goodness. I finished this REALLY last minute. But it I had a bit more time I think I would have done a design that had more color to it and I think I would have incorporated some jazz instruments, but hey, I still won the competition, which was surprising.

3 Lines Project

For my parallel lines I decided to do a seashell because I thought it would be good to depect with just parallel lines. For my stippling piece I wanted to use paint because I wanted to blend the colors and becasue I like using paint. The stippling piece took the longest time because it was teidous and I made some mistakes along the way but managed to fix them. For my continuous lines piece I decided to draw onions, ginger, garlic, salt, and soysauce. The continuous lines piece was actually the piece I had the most fun with. The hardest piece in my opinon was the parallel lines piece because it was hard to make the shelllook realistic.

Shoes Composition

Even though this project sounded fairly simple and easy to do, it turned out to be time consuming and meticulous. My photograph had many fine details so that was a challenge to depict in my drawing as well as my shapes composition. For my drawing piece I decided to use a grid to make the objects look as realistic and proportional as possible. I drew it in pencil but outlined it with thin and thick sharpie. The shapes composition was the hardest to do, and it took, me an incredibly long time to complete. My shoes, especially the 2 pairs of Converse, had detailed components and it was hard to cut out the shapes for them. I decided to add texutre to my flip-flos because I felt that, if I don't the picture would be unbalanced witht eh detailed Converse all on the lower half of the paper. My shapes composition doesn't look like it took a long time to do, but you're wrong!!!!

Artist Trading Cards

For my artist trading cards I started painting color onto the cards as the backgrounds, not knowing exactly what I wanted the cards to look like (ie-their desing, subject matter). I painted and mixed colors that I liked, and after I did that I started thinking about the subject matter based primarily on what would match the background of the cards. I was not thinking about the theme just yet; I wanted to play around with the cards the see what could come out from them. I then got the idea of writing words onto each of my cards, and that was how the theme developed. My theme is basically my values in life and what I consider important and significant. For example, for one card, I wrote "hope", because I personally think that it is important to have hope in my life in order to be happy. The illustrations on my cards reflect these inspirational words. For example, for my card "appreciation", I decided to paint dandelions and small plants because these things are usually neglected; people don't really pay much attention to them, and take God's creation for granted. I made that card because I feel it is important to notice and to be thankful for things we usually take for granted. I decided to use mainly paint as my medium because I felt that paint would give me the most freedom in terms of blending and mixing colors, and because paint is more fun to work with. I used marker for some of the finer lines like the details of the butterfly and the ship, and I also used marker to write in some of the words on the cards. I didn't encounter any major obstacles with this project but I didn't have a lot of time to work on my cards; more time would have been better because I could have done more work like paint the back of the cards also. Another obstacle I encountered was mixing the colors. I had trouble matching some of the original colors because I had limited paint, but my cards came out okay in the end.


Still Life with Newsprint

With this assignment we were intructed to draw the still life that was put up in front of the room, and we had to incorporate newspaper into the composition. I decided to cover the baseball, the kettle, and the pinecone with newspaper, and I also decided to add some abstract elements to my piece (the kettle covered with different colors from magazine, the smoke coming out of the kettle, the pink cloth, and the blue background.) In case some of you may be wondering, the smoke does not represent any special and/or significant meaning; I decided to add those because I wanted my piece to be abstract and because I needed something to fill the space towards the top of the composition. Some of the challenges I encountered: honestly, I am not so great at sketching with pencil and depicting still life with pencil; I believe I work better with paint, so it was difficult to get the objects in my composition to look as realistic as I wanted them to look, and it was hard for me to create definition.
